Vice President Dennis Leno “Merry Christmas!

“My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?” – Bob Hope

This holiday season I would like to start by thanking all of you for your hard work and dedication! What an inspiration you all have been in your work to make Maintenance Engineering the greatest lighting company in the nation! We are poised to become true innovators in our field next year and it will take all of our collective talents to make it so!

So as we reflect on the past, present, and future, let’s all make a commitment to pass on this love and inspiration to our peers. What a great time of the year to honor all the good things we have in our lives. This season is a great opportunity to take the time to share this love and gratitude not only with your family, but with your friends, coworkers, and customers! Let them know how special they are to you!

“Every great business is built on friendship.” – James Cash Penney

One of the things I have always loved about being a lighting specialist is talking with customers. I love to talk to people! I have learned so many useful and interesting things from our customers. Over the years, they have shared with me their life experiences, hopes, and dreams. What an honor it is to have this opportunity in lighting and friendship!

My experience is not unique. Our most successful lighting specialists have all had that experience. It’s not just the nuts and bolts of lighting that make for a long term relationship. It is the friendship you create and sustain with your customer.

If there is one thing I would tell a new lighting specialist and for that matter anybody starting in business it would be…go out there brighten someone’s day and make a friend!

Vice President Dennis Leno “OPTIMIZE YOUR DRIVE TIME”

Lighting specialists can face a lot of windshield time when going through their day. While it is best to minimize this whenever possible, many times it is impossible to avoid being stuck in traf c. This time can be incredibly frustrating and also be a real time waster. How can we use this time productively?

What I do to make this time more productive is to work on creating a positive attitude. I have many motivational books on CD that I listen to that help with this. Dale Carnegie, Zig Ziglar, and The Secret, are some of my favorites that help me cultivate a positive attitude. I have known some Reps that even listen to their own recording of M.E. product and sales seminars. What a great way for a lighting specialist to improve their craft!

Another thing many reps do (including myself) is practice the presentation out loud while driving. It’s a wonderful way to warm up your voice and get into a good mindset for the day!

Vice President Dennis Leno “Your Attitude Is Your Armor.”

As you go through life you will run into negative people. It occurs in all walks of life. Customer Service Reps, Lighting Specialists, Product Service Reps, even Vice Presidents and Presidents experience negative people! Everyone has come across a situation where someone’s bad attitude becomes directed towards them. “Why?” is usually the first question we ask ourselves. Like it’s our fault! Well it’s not!

Almost always the perpetrator of negativity is suffering and lashing out blindly. But that does not mean you need to let it affect you. Your responsibility, is your attitude. Every morning before I leave the house I put on my armor. I literally imagine it surrounding me and deflecting negativity that may come from others. This armor is my attitude. A positive attitude will deflect any negativity that comes your way. When you cultivate a positive attitude you will not take ownership of another person’s negativity.

Attitude and Gratitude

I have heard it said that “to be thankful is to be thoughtful.” Which means to reflect each day on all the good things you have in your life. Have you ever taken something for granted then realized how good it was for you after it was gone?

Recognize the good in your life and be thankful for all the beneficial forces that have brought you a sense of joy and well-being. Do this for no other reason than to recognize the good as the good. Do it every day! Even 2 to 3 times a day!

If you don’t recognize the good in your past and present, then you will probably not recognize it in your future. The benefits of recognizing the good in your everyday life are endless. Keep a daily journal of things your are thankful for every day. Write a letter of gratitude to someone. Make gratitude part of your daily prayers or meditations. Doing this will energize the good in your life. Focus on all the good you have and nurture it in your mind, body, and your spirit!

Good selling!
